What is an Agent?
An agent is a customized AI chatbot that you own and control. Under the hood, every agent has four core components that work together:
Because the agent only uses your knowledge base, it stays focused on your content and won’t go off-topic or hallucinate answers from the open web.
Creating an Agent
- Open your dashboard.
- Click Create New Agent.
- BotSmith immediately creates an agent with sensible defaults and opens its builder.

Your plan limits how many agents you can create. Check your current usage and upgrade at Account & Plans.
Choosing an AI Model
BotSmith supports models from three leading AI providers. Select the model that best balances capability and cost for your use case.
You can switch the model at any time from the Settings tab inside the agent builder — no retraining required.
Managing Your Agents
Your dashboard lists every agent you’ve created in a table with the following columns:- Agent Name — click the row to open the agent builder
- Status — Active or Inactive badge
- Model — the AI model currently in use
- Messages — total message count across all conversations
Changes take effect in real time — no deployment step is needed.
Agent Status
An agent’s status controls whether it responds to users.
Set an agent to Inactive when you need to take it offline temporarily — for example, while you are retraining it with new content or making significant changes to its persona.
